Carbon > CC

In both traditional letter writing and in its digital variant “cc” stands for “carbon copy”-- an example of a new technology adopting the terminology of its predecessor. CC consists of images of scanned carbon paper that have been cropped and enlarged to 30” x 40.” The resulting images, which register and magnify the various folds and flaws of the paper, resemble stark landscapes or clouds depending on the brand and quality of the paper. In this sense they become an archive of sorts recording a nearly obsolete material by the technology that has replaced it. A recent variation on this project, CC Primo Levi , consists of the author’s chapter on carbon from The Periodic Table typed onto a single sheet of carbon paper as a palimpsest.
