Carbon > Archipelago

Archipelago employs found images from Google Earth to depict residual mining sites in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Various slag heaps, torn from their surrounding context, suggest a series of islands linked by an underlying geological formation. Real landscapes become fictive while retaining traces of their actual appearance. The shapes also suggest a variety of other metaphors from sea creatures to decayed bodily organs and reintroduce the broader issue of environmental degradation.
