Portfolio > Black Deserts

Black Deserts, looks at the slag heaps of Northeastern Pennsylvania and addresses the attempt to live with and domesticate a series of residual industrial sites, These sites, which survive as vestiges of an obsolete coal mining industry, also suggest parodic replications of the sublime western landscapes of Timothy O’ Sullivan and William Henry Jackson. They function as both lived and vicarious landscapes, backdrops to everyday life and sites of imaginary projection.
